Starting this month, Americans can order free COVID-19 test kits to be delivered straight to their door. The U.S. government is relaunching its popular COVID-19 test distribution program, allowing households to order up to four nasal swab tests via COVIDTests.gov. 

The U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) agency managing the program has not yet announced the exact date when orders will open.

According to an agency spokesperson, the tests are designed to detect current COVID-19 strains and will be available before the holiday season, when families and friends typically gather.

These free tests are crucial as families and friends prepare to gather for holiday celebrations, which typically lead to higher risks of virus spread. The tests are updated to detect the current strains of the virus, ensuring accurate results even as the virus evolves.

Last month, U.S. officials approved an improved COVID-19 vaccination that is intended to battle recent virus strains and future winter viruses.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also approved an updated COVID-19 vaccine targeting the latest virus strains. The vaccine is recommended for everyone aged six months and older.

As protection from past infections or immunizations fades, it is critical to remain protected with up-to-date vaccines. Last fall’s shots were targeted to strains that were no longer in circulation, underlining the necessity of staying current on immunizations.

With free COVID-19 tests and updated vaccines, Americans can be better prepared for the upcoming winter season and any potential surges in virus transmission.
